Project

This module focused on understanding the relationship between material, ergonomics, craftsmanship, and aesthetics in footwear design. Inspired by Nappa Dori’s design language, the project explored the creation of leather footwear that balances functionality, comfort, and contemporary style.

Through hands-on prototyping and making, I experimented with different construction techniques, forms, and material applications across various footwear styles. The process helped me develop a deeper understanding of foot anatomy, fit, and user comfort while refining my ability to translate brand values into thoughtfully crafted footwear designs.

Learnings
  • Learned to translate a footwear concept into patterns, understanding how two-dimensional pattern pieces come together to create a three-dimensional form.

  • Gained hands-on experience in prototyping, helping me evaluate proportions, ergonomics, and functionality before final production.

  • Improved my understanding of leather as a material, including its behavior during cutting, shaping, stitching, and finishing.

  • Understood how brand language can influence design choices, materials, details, and overall product identity.

  • Developed greater confidence in visualizing forms on the foot and refining designs through an iterative making process.
